Patrick Antosh - Clothing and Fashion Design
Patrick Antosh
BIO

Birthday: October 14, 1965
Birth Place: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Patrick Antosh was born in Toronto, Ontario. His family moved when Patrick was still quite young to the quaint little town of Fergus in southwestern Ontario, approximately 85 miles northwest of Toronto where he grew up. He attended elementary and high school in Fergus and early on showed a bent for artistic courses.

He steered away from the arts after high school, except for some interior decorating that he did on the side, to concentrate on what he considered a more practical career. In 1995, he found himself unemployed. A friend, who was working at the time on the high budget movie “Johnny Mnemonic”, introduced him to film life in Toronto. It was on that set that he met and began to work with Olga Dimitrov, one of Canada’s best known costume designers. Dimitrov saw potential in Patrick and took him under her wing, showing him the ropes, and encouraging him to design. He has since worked as costume designer or wardrobe assistant on a number of movies and TV series.

patrick antoshPatrick was employed as costume designer for the popular TV series “Queer as Folk” where he manages costumes for up to 40 characters at a time. He designs original clothing featured on the show, including his own line of outrageous T-shirts available for purchase at the QAF website.

As a costume designer, Patrick’s aim is to help actors “see” their characters and to bring the story to life for each particular audience. The tools of his trade–colour, texture, pattern, and form–all are deliberate choices he makes in designing costume for each character. He labours over detailed research into the design of a particular time period and location. Then he works closely with writers and producers to design clothing that reflects the personality and environment of each character. Following that, he works with each actor to create the look of the particular character being portrayed. The job doesn’t end there: almost every episode has a new director who brings to the set his or her own artistic interpretation. It’s a daunting task to collaborate with so many professionals, respect each person’s opinion, and maintain the integrity of the show at the same time. But one that Patrick is up to.

It’s the challenge and excitement of the film industry that keeps Patrick in the business. He has a terrific sense of humour, is lots of fun, has a quick mind, loves working with others and being on the cutting edge of the evolution of costume design.

Patrick can often be seen attending art shows, openings, and designer shows both in North America and Europe. He loves to travel overseas, particularly at Christmas, mainly to Paris and Luxembourg, where he networks with other designers. He is always looking for fresh ideas that he can adapt to the show on which he is currently working.
